The Curator’s record
Observers who believe the smile has become less cheerful are instructed to review their surroundings rather than demand proof from the object.
Provenance
The carving traveled aboard voyaging canoes for generations. Navigator Manu taught Tavita that it could warn of danger but would not command the sea or rescue those who ignored it. Its route to the Caravan is unknown.
Observed activity
The smiling expression subtly changes before danger. It does not calm storms or correct poor judgment; its function is limited to warning.
